29th Annual Eastern Idaho Fly Tying Expo
The fishing calendar is about to get started but first, there is the Fly Tying Expo at the Mountain America Center in Idaho Falls. Friday and Saturday, we are blowing out what is left of the 2024 inventory including a fantastic fly sale. All styles of flies are deeply discounted, providing a great opportunity to fill up your box, your kid’s box, your dad’s box, and it is Valentine’s Day on Friday so you might as well fill your wife’s box too.
Todd Lanning will be all over the place at the show. Friday morning you will find him tying at table 40, 10:30am on Saturday he will be spilling the beans in conference room #2 during his always evolving presentation “Fishing the Henry’s Fork and the Surrounding Waters” and Saturday afternoon Todd will be back on the vise at table 12. If you miss Todd don’t fret, Josh and Bueno will be working the booth slinging flies and great buys. More details on the Expo can be found here.

Friday night at TroutHunter HQ, Chef Poe and his team are preparing what is annually considered the best Valentine’s Day Specials in Island Park. This winter’s craft cocktails will “Wu”-bricate your evening. Make sure to get your table reserved if you want to impress your date.

Fishing on the Henrys Fork this time of the year can be an adventure, to say the least.
Most of the boat ramps are inaccessible due to the snow. Wading is a great option, but
you want to be out there on the right day. I don’t like going out if the temps are not
above freezing. We have seen some temps well below freezing this winter, cold enough
to freeze the river. We will have another cold snap in the immediate future; however, next week has a few days with the potential for temps 32 and slightly above. The good news is when the temps get above freezing, the midge fishing can be great!

Floating is currently not an option unless you want to drag a boat or raft to a boat ramp. Ora was open for a little while, I believe someone opened it up with a plow but that’s no longer the case. There is plenty of opportunity to wade fish if conditions are right and you have some time then get out there. Your box should have some Zebra Midges, smaller rubber legs, and a few streamers. The trout spey guys are having good days swinging black leeches. (Check out those Idaho Falls Show Bins) Monitor the weather and if things are looking warmer, get out there and enjoy a little time on the water. Don’t be afraid to give us a call at the shop for up-to-the-minute conditions or check in on the webcam.
