BOX CANYON: Flows in the Box are currently 218cfs. The nymph fishing through the canyon has been solid and with these flows this is an excellent time to do some rare wading in the Box this time of year. Small rubberleg patterns with small bead head nymphs off the back will assure some hook ups. Streamer patterns imitating sculpin, juvenile rainbow trout and whitefish will get the job done. A hopper and dropper can work for those who refuse to give up on the dry.
THE RAILROAD RANCH: Blue Winged Olives and Mahogany duns are the order of the day. With evening temps toward the freezing point or below, have an extra cup of coffee before hitting the river. Terrestrials. October caddis, and midges should round out your offering.
WARM RIVER – ASHTON: This stretch has been outstanding. Small rubber legs and bead heads have been keeping the nets busy and have been getting the attention of some large rainbows. Big gaudy streamers will turn the heads of hungry browns.
LOWER RIVER: Still weedy, but the trout are sensing the change of season and getting active again. The BWO activity has been picking up. Rubberlegs, beadheads, and streamers are all putting fish in nets.
THE LAKES: Good reports finally arrived last week from Henry’s, as did more anglers. Small leeches in olive and black have been getting the job done. There are still some Callibaetis so a BH PT behind your leech may get a few additional cuttys. Get out there early or get out there late, mid-day has been tough.
THE MADISON: Double nymph rigs are the standard and will most certainly put fish in the net. Streamers can round out your fun, and a hopper dropper combo will still bring them in.
YNP:Crowds have thinned slightly and fall spawning Rainbow from Hebgen are in the Madison, so you can get your swing on. The NE corner and the Yellowstone itself have provided some additional opportunities.
